Makli – The Great Necropolis

One fine day, when the weather was being extremely kind to us Karachiites, my family and I decided to head out to Thatta. For those of who do not know, Thatta is an ancient city in the interior of Sindh. It was once upon a time the capital of Sindh during the Mughal Era. The city itself is small but houses some of the most magnificent historical sites in the region. The first and foremost being the Shahi Mosque built by the Mughal Emperor Shahjahan and, of course, the necropolis called Makli.

One of the main reasons for going to Thatta was because we were bored and hadn’t visited in a long time, as we also have family there. It takes about two hours maximum to reach Makli which is on the outskirts of Thatta from Karachi.

I have been to Makli quite a few times, but each and every time this place leaves me in awe. The magnificent tombs in the necropolis date back over 400 years and intricate designs are truly a sight.

Makli is a World Heritage site and is protected by UNESCO. However, due to uncontrollable weather conditions and natural disaster, the place is not what it once was. When one reaches the place, this sign below is what greets you. The entry to the place is free, however, they have now started a shuttle service with a tour guide that takes one around!

As we walk on forward, we get to see the following:

Further down the path, we come across the shrine of a saint/scholar called Abdul Shah Ashabi who came to Sindh around 10th A.H from Baghdad.

We only visited the shrine and Makli this time around, but there are other places that are definitely worth a visit such as the Shahi Mosque and the Keenjar lake. So if you happen to be in Karachi, and are looking for a day trip, this is place is a must especially if you’re a history buff.
